Sir George Elliot, chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand, and Mr. Oliver Nicholson, a member of the directorate, returned to Auckland by the Limited last night. . . The death occurred yesterday at Palnierston North of Mr. Eobert H. Newth, senior, in his 88th year. Deceased first went "to the Manawatu 58 years ago, when the borough was akin to a backblock township. He is survived by four sons and three daughters, his wife and two of his children having predeceased him. ■' '■ ... The University of New Zealand received cabled information yesterday morning that, the 1851 Exhibition Science Research Scholarship has been awarded by the Commissioner in London to Mr. W. Gr.Macky, M.Sc, of the Auckland University College. Mr. Macky will leave shortly for Gonvjlle and Caius College, Cambridge, to pursue his research instruction. The value of the scholarship is £250 a year, but additional allowances are generally granted. The scholarship- is • tenable for two years, but may be extended in exceptional eases.. ' . The death took place of Mr. John Waugh, late of Wairarapa and Kimbolton, at Palmerston North yesterday. Born in Scotland in 1837, the late Mr. 1 Waugh came to New Zealand in the Lady Roslyne in 1882, and took up land in the Wairarapa district. Following a short stay there he proceeded to the Kimboltou. district, where he farmed for a number of years and retired some ton years ago. • His wife pre-deeeased him about a year ago. He leaves a family of four sons and four daughters, as well as about 70 grand and greatgrandchildren. The members of the family surviving are Ada'nv Waugh (Mata Koua), James Waugh (Taonui), J. D. Waugh (Kimbolton), and John Waugh (Marlborough); Mrs. Austin (Ashhurst), Mrs: C. N. Anderson (Napier), Mrs. Eyburn , (Hamilton), and Miss Margaret Waugh (Taonui).
