EXTRA MONEY

FOR RELIEF SUBSIDIES . At the conclusion of the Imprest Supply debate in the House of Kepresentativse this morning a Bill was passed extending the borrowing powers of local bodies for the purpose, of unemployment relief for one year, until 30th June, 1929. The aggregate amount of subsidies payable out •of the Consolidated Fund to local authorities on amounts expended on public works in relief of unemployment was increased from £150,000 to £300,000. Mr. E. M'Keen (Wellington South) urged the Government to give a £ for A subsidy on relief works carried out by local bodies. He maintained that the local bodies were carrying the greater part of the burden which should be shouldered by the Government. This appeal was supported by Mr. D. G. Sullivan (Avon). ■• \ The Prime Minister (the Eight Hon. J. G. Coates) said that the question of subsidy on materials opened up a ,yery wide field, and so far claims on materials had not been entertained. In regard to complaints made that hospital and charitable aid boards found difficulty in finding suitable work for certain^ men who were unfitted for rough navvying, the Minister of Health was making arrangements for the same ineasurs of assistance as was given last year. .
