BIBLE IN SCHOOLS
AN AMENDED.BILL The Religious Exercises in Schools Bill, to be introduced again this session by Mr. 11. Holland (Christchurch North), has been amended in slight detail, a decision to this effect having been made at a meeting of those members and others interested in the Bill, last night. ' The new Bill widens the explanation which may bo given by tho teachers from the manual to bo compiled by the Education Department, verbal explanations being allowed. Permission is also given for the continuance of the N<ilson system where it is being carried on effectively in the event of the new Bill becoming law. Native schools are to be exempted from the operations of the Bill. It has been deemed prudent to make this alternative in respect to Native schools .because the stationery and books for such schools is supplied by tho State, and if those schools were still referred to in the Bill there would be a risk (f the measure being ruled out as involving an appropriation. The Bill is in charge of a private member, and it is not competent for a private member to, promote a bill which in any way affects an increaso in the expenditure of Government funds, this being the prerogative of tho Government as representing tho Crown.
