SURGICAL SKILL
I RARELY . PERFORMED OPERATION (By Telegraph.) . (Special to "The Evenina Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Through an operation skilfully carried out by the honorary surgeons at the Christchurch Hospital, J. Turpin, the well-known Linwood Rugby Club footballer, has boen saved from what might have been life-long paralysis. He is now on-.the road to recovery. Turpin was injurod in the LinwoodMerivale match on 2nd June. He tried to tackle C. Oliver high, and he wont right over the Merivalo man's nock, falling heavily on the ground. He twisted as ho fell, and came down on tho back of his neck. It was found that Turpin had dislocated his cervical vertebrae, and he was partially paralysed. The operation demanded a great deal of skill, as the vertebrae had to be manipulated back into position. The first operation was not successful, but at the second attempt last Sunday tho surgeons were successful. . He is now on the mend, though it may be months boforo it will be possible to have tho casing of plastor of paris removed. The operation was'a raro feat of surgical' skill, and recovery in a case such as Turpin 's was, ia extremely rare. A doctor with over 30 years' association with tho Christchureh Hospital does not remember a parallel case.
