Chief-Detective Ward said that tlie_ accused,' who was 20 years of age, arrived in the' Dominion from Scotland about three years ago, and had been doing do- "'': niestic work,' chiefly in the South Island. ■'' On'Slst April last she called on a doctor, in Christehurch, and, presenting a collecting card, said she was collecting for a home in Auckland. The accused gave the ' name of Grant. Seeing that a name had ' been erased on the collecting card the doctor became suspicion. Inquiries were made and the girl was interviewed in Wellington recently. Her explanation ot Her action was that she was without money and yielded to a sudden impulse, bince coming back to Wellington the accused had obtained domestic employment. Although she had not been before the Court previously, tho Christehurch police recommended that she should be put under some form of surveillance. The Probation Officer (Miss Simpson) thought that the accused should be given probation and her name suppressed. The Magistrate (Mr. E. Page, &.M.) admit ed thl accused to twelve months' pro; bation. As she was young and it was hei ferthpw, he would make an order for the suppression o£ the name.
