MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Police cases at the Magistrate's Court yesterday were dealt with by Mr. E. 1 age, V first offender for drunkenness, who spent the night in the cells, was convicted and discharged. Another, who did not appear, was fined the amount of his bail, Leslie Herbert Howe, a labourer, aged 35 pleaded guilty to charges o£ fraudulently incurring a debt o£ £0 11s 3d, and to obtaining credit by fraud by' means of a valueless cheque for £8 from Dennis Boolieris. Chief-Detective Ward asked that the accused be remanded.as he wished to make some more inquiries about the man. Other cheque forms were found in his possession, one being filled-in. He wished to ascertain whether any more had been uttered. The accused was remanded to Tuesday next. . ' The theft of bicycle, valued at £10, the property of John Abraham Brogcn, was admitted by Robert Alexander Smythe, a labourer, aged 23. Chief-Detective Ward said that the bicycle was stolen by the accused in the street on sth June. The next day lie took the machine to Petone and endeavoured to sell it at a cycle shop. The cycle dealer, however, became a little buspicious, and when the police were called, the accused admitted having stolen the bicycle in Wellington. Smythe, who had been in custody since 6th June, had told the police that be was hard up when he took the bicycle. The Probation Officer (Mr. T. P. Mills) thought the accused might be given a chance. Smythe was ad-, mitted to twelve months' probation, a condition being made that he remains in the Salvation Army Home until he obtains work. ______________
