STAYED TOO LONG
CHINESE GARDENER FINED "There is evidently an organised gang working these permits, for a large number have overstayed their leave," said tho Collector of Customs (Mr ( E. T. W. MacLaurin) in the Magistrate's 'Court to-day, "when a Chinese gardener, Lee Sow, alias Mali Cliing Lee, aged 29, appeared on remand on a charge p£ remaining m New Zealand after the expiration of his temporary permit. Appearing for Lee Sow, who • pleaded guilty, :Mr. W. Perry said that a bond had been entered' into in Auckland witli the Collector .of Customs-. that the accused would leave Now Zealand within a month. Mr. MacLaurin said that Lee Sow had overstayed his leave by twenty-one months. In many cases the Department had had to pay passages back to China out of Government funds. The Magistrate (Mr. E. Page, S.M.), said it would' appear that some organisation was at work with the object of evading the regulations. A fine of. £,20 was imposed on Lee Sow, who was also ordered to pay an interpreter's fee. He was allowed until Tuesday to pay, and.was given his liberty in the •meantime. .
