SCHOOL SERVICES

Impressive "services were- held in all tlie schools yesterday morning. Appropriate addresses were given by returned soldiers and others, tho speakers being the following:—Captain 13. Kirk, M.C. (Northland); Mr. 11. K. Browne (Kaiwarra); Major Sievwright (Newtown); Mr. B. W. Tooinath (Petone Central); Lieutenant-Colonel T. W. M'Donaid (Petone West); Major D. C. Armstroug (Eoscneath); Captain P. Bareham (Mitchclltown); Colonel Hall, C.M.G., C.B.E. (Marsden College); Mr. B. Egley (Wellington South); Mr. M. Badger "(Lyai) Bay); Major St. J. Keenan, D.S.O. (Worser Bay); Captain Galloway, M.C. (Ngaio); Captain E. H. Nimmo (Johnsonville); . Chaplain-Cap-tain E. J. Harewood, 0.8. E. (Kilbirnie); Mr. A. Jarlane and Captain Steele (Wadostown); the Hon. E. A. Wright. Messrs. N. A. Foden, and H. L. P. Dyett (Karori); tho Bey. C. Eaton and Mr. W. 11. Phillips (Clyde Quay). Colonel B. S. M'Quarrie, D.5.0., M.C, was tho speaker at Brooklyn .A number of Boy Scouts participated, and the service was also attended by Ensign E. Jackson (Salvation Army) and the Kovs. P. Houghton, M.A., G. D. Falconer, K. Baine, and W. Boilings. The service fit Wcllesley College was conducted by the Vcn. Archdeacon A. M. Johnson, M.A. The service opened with the Lord's Prayer, after which the liynm "O God, Our Help in Ages Past" was sung. Captain C. A. L. Treadwell, 0.8. E., delivered a spirited address. Anzac Day, he said, liad been sot apart as a "holy day." It gave to those who had served an opportunity of telling them something of tho events associated with tho first Anzac Day, and what tlicy had to do to justify the sacrifice of those who had not come back. Tho service concluded with the singing of tho "Eecessiorial" and the National Anthem. After the service the headmaster and. two of the prefects attended the service held in the Parliament House Grounds, and, on behalf of tho schbolj placed a wreath at. tho foot of the cenotaph. At Clyde quay school suitable hymns were sung by the large gathering of pupils, old scholars, and parents who had assembled. Instructive and appropriate addresses were delivered by tho chairman of the School Committee (Mr. W. H. Phillips) and the Bey. Clarence Eaton. , The service at tho Berhampore school was attended by a large, number of parents and old pupils. The speaker was Colonel Beere, and the Scripture and prayers wero : read by Bey. Mr. Barnott. The "Last Post" and the "Beveillc" wero played by Bugler Ball. An inspiring ceremony was held at 9.30 a.m. at the Hutt Central school, when tho pupils, teachers, and a number of- parents gathered round the school honours board and held a memorial service. Captain Andrews gave the address to the children, and tho Bey. C. Olds led ill prayer. The children and parents filed past, leaving their floral tributes at tho foot of the.board. The Bey. H. E. Edridge conducted the service at tho Pctonc Central School. Adjutant Brown, of the Salvation Army, arid Lieutenant It. W. Toomatli, president of the Hutt Valley branch of tho R.S.A., addressed the gathering, and the- Salvation Army Band led the singing.. After tho ceremony tho children placed flowers on the Cenotaph. ■•■■■•-.■• ••■-■• - At tho Petono West School tho service was conducted by the Boy. J. C. Loan. The Bey. I*1. S. Bamson and Colonel T. W. M'Donald, of tho 8.5.A., .spoke, and, with tho Municipal Band leading, hymns wero sung. Assistant Scoutmaster E. Pawson and Assistant Cubinaster L. Jenness sounded the "Last Post." . A .similar service was held at tho Wilford-School, tho Itev. J. C. Loan leading in prayer and pronouncing tho Benediction, and Colonel T. W. M'Donald speaking. Tho speaker at Ngaio was Captain M. S. Galloway, M.C, who gave a vivid description of incidents of tliO'Gallipoli landing. He urged the boys and girls to perform their daily duties in the ti no spirit of Auzac.
