PAINTERS' APPRENTICES
.- •.: ■. ■ —_—' ♦ ' ' :- The annual distribution of prizes to painters' apprentices was made at tho Technical School on Wednesday, in the pr6seuce of" members of tho Apprenticeship Committee. . ■ Mr. S. ;Roberts, 'the chairman, in presenting the prizes, referred to tho close and friendly co-operation of the employers and the workers in providing technical training for. the apprentices in the, trade. It; was gratifying to members/of, the committee, who iwere responsible-!for the establishment of the-class, that boys, had made such progress under the able instruction of Mr. E. Haukey. Mr. A. E. Wailc, District Registrar of Apprentices, in addressing the pupils, stressed the advantages of technical training in order that apprentices might have their knowledge of tho trade augmented-and become cflicicnt craftsmen. He also referred to tho co-operation between the Labour Department, employers, and workers' organisations in the interests of approntices. Other speakers were Mr. P. J. O'Neill and Mr. F. C'Standidgc, representing the employees' and employers' unions respectively. : Prizes to the value ol' six-guineas wore distributed, the cost being evenly borne by the1. Master Painters' and Workers' Unions. Mr. H. M. Hopper, ol' the Labour Department, is the secretary of tho committee. The following were . the prize-winners:—-Senior class: H. Tyrcr, dux of class, two prizes; F. Leeks, first prize paiuting practice; Charles Conical, first prize drawing; William Rowc, second prize drawing and second prize for work in paint-shop. Junior class.—D.' Cameron, second prize drawing; W. Adams, special prize for diligence and conduct; G. Aubrey, special mention .made: of his excellent attondanco record. Other prizes were also distributed.
