CHINESE PIRATES
QUESTION OF SUPPRESSION ' (Received 28th January, 8 a.m.) SHANGHAI, 2Gth January. The Foreign Powers have voluntarily abandoned the plan of jointly suppressing piracy in South China, according to a report from Pekin. This is due to the expense of providing the necessary gunboats and the possibility of Chinese misunderstanding such action. It is understood that as an alternative the Powers will request the Nationalist Government to undertake effective measures of suppression along the coasts of the Fukien and Kwangtung Provinces and guarantee) the safe navigation of foreign vessels plying these waters. Fifteen pirates who participated in the Sannamhoi piracy on 17th January, which resulted in the death of a British officer and Indian guards, have been executed.
