TROTTING NOTES
The Great Bingen-Native Chief Match. There is some doubt in the minds of southerners whether the proposed match between Great Bingen and Native Chief will eventuate. D. Withers, the trainer of Great Bingen, is still away resting in accordance with orders from his doctor. Withers did not make at all a satisfactory recovery from the effects of the fall at Auckland. Great Bingen, too, was sore for some time after he arrived home. Quiet Times. Although there are a couple of dozen horses regularly at Epsom, the work is mostly confined to steady jogging, with the exception of two or three Worses wl*o have been Bent south to compete at' the Hawkes Bay Trotting Club's Meeting. However, the Otahuhu Trotting Club's summer fixture is gradually drawing near, and within the next week or two matters at the Epsom track should be livened up considerably. Humour. The half-mile track at Victoria Park, Greymouth, has its disadvantages, and in two-mile races especially drivers are apt to lose count of the number of rounds in an exciting race. This has ■ happened move than once in recent years, and at a meeting of the Canterbury Owners and Breeders' Association it was decided to ask the Greymouth Club to install an electric bell to be rung on the commencement of the laßt lap. Miscellaneous. With less than half the season gone, W. J. Tomkinson has already trained the winners of thirteen races. The. Auckland trainer, J. S. Shaw, has twelve wins to his credit, and J. Henderson, of Oamaru, has produced the whraerß. of ten races. Talent, who has done a good deal of racing, is at present having a spell.
