NATIONAL GOLF

MORPETH BEATS DUNCAN GRANT WINS FROM LUSK NARROW VICTORIES Perfect golfing weather continued yesterday afternoon for the second round of the Kirk-Windeyer Tournament at Miramar. The draw again brought together players who were evenly matched, and some of the names were excellently fought out. Dale again demonstrated his ability as a fighter against Sime, a much more redoubtable opponent than he met •in the morning in Seifert. Sime is one of the finest fighting players in New Zealand, and when he lias had a run of one or two cood holes is likely to prove invincible. Dale gave Sime a taste of his quality by narrowly missing a 3 at the first, which was halved in 4's, as was the next hole. Dale was short with Mb second at the next long hole, howevc:, and Sime won 4-5. The next was halved in 3's. Sime had to sink a ten-foot putt for a half in 4 at the next, as Dale's putt for a 3 hovered just on the edge of the cup. The short hole was uneventfully halved in 3's. Both were in the rough at the redoubtable "Hillside," but Dale got out better, and won the hole in 5-6. Sime made a perfect chip at the eighth, however, and got down in 3, but he pushed his tee shot out at the next, which Dale took in 4, squaring the game at the turn. The tenth was halved in s's. Sime found a bad position up the bank at the eleventh, which Dale took in, 5-6. Sime caught up again with a 2 at the twelfth, which cost Dale 4. The thirteen was halved in 4's. Dale pulled his tee shot at the fourteenth, which Sime took in 3. Sime also won the next in 4, standing 2 up. The sixteenth, where Dale stymied Sime, was halved in s's. Dormie 2. Sime began to feel comfortable, but Dale gave him a shock by sinking a very long putt for a 4, and went on only 1 down. The next was halved in s's. Sime winning 1 up. Kenneth Ross had the better of his game with W. R. Smith, the Australian, who seemed to feel the strain of his tough game with Horton in the morning. The first two holes were halved. Ross won the third in 4, the next in 3, and the next in 4, Smith finding the rough at the latter. Smith, however, won the short hole, but this temporary respite was dashed when he lost his ball in the dense rough to the left at "Hillside," and gave up the hole. Ross won the - eighth in 4, and Smith won the next in 4, reaching the turn 3 down. After that the game was Ross's. Fine golf characterised the game between A. D. S. Duncan and Sloan Morpeth up to the twelfth hole, where Duncan found a hollow near the ditch from a short tee shot, after which he did not win a hole. The first was halved in s's. Duncan won the next in 3 with a long putt. The next was halved in 4's, the next in 3's, and the next in 4's. Morpeth sunk a long putt for a 2 at the short hole, squaring the game. At the seventh, Duncan played a magnificent second against the wind, which gave him a comfortable chip close to the pin, and he got down in 4. Morpeth's second was too close in' to the hill, and it finished in the rough with a bunker between it and the green, the Hole costing him 0. Duncan 1 up. Morpeth squared the game again at the eighth with a 3. Though Morpeth found the bunker at the ninth with a long drive, he played a beautiful mashie clean off the sand, approached well from well on the green, and secured a half in 4. A beautiful second straight into the strong wind at the tenth enabled Morpeth to lay his approach putt nearly dead, and he took the hole in 4 to Duncan's 5, the latter hooking his second into the rough. The eleventh was halved in an interesting 4. Duncan was short with his mashie shot at the twelfth, short out of trouble, and short with his putt, Morpeth, approaching finely from an overstrong tee shot getting down in 3. Morpeth 2 up. At the thirteenth Duncan missed a two-foot putt, Morpeth 3 up. At the fourteenth Duncan's tee shot was out to the left, and he was short with his second, and Morpeth, who had played a magnificent tee shot straight on the pirif took an easy 3. Duncan 4 down. The fifteenth, where both ran out into the rough, was interesting. Duncan's ball lay only just off the fairway in a fair lie. Morpeth's lay in a most unenviable position, well down the hill beside a large notice board which interfered with his back swing, but after Duncan had placed his ball well on the green, the Titirangi crack, with a short, almost upright swing, standing very open, played a beautiful high ball which landed well on the green, and the hole was halved in 4's, Morpeth winning 4 and 3. There was a classic struggle between Grant and Luslc. Grant, as in the morning, started badly. From a good drive he his second in the bunker, but got out well, and ended by sinking a long putt for a 5 to Lusk's neat 4. The next was halved in 4's. Lusk won the third in 4. The next was halved in 4's. Lusk, holing a 3 at the fifth, was 3 up, having gone so far in one below 4's. Grant, who had been in the bunker, holed a four-yard putt for a 3 at the sixth, taking the hole from Lusk, who had also been in trouble. Lusk got out of trouble well at the seventh, which was halved in s's. At the eighth Grant holed a six-foot putt for a 3, bringing Lusk down to 1 up, and he squared the game at the turn, where he missed a three-foot putt for a 3. The tenth was halved in s's. Both pulled into the rough at the eleventh, which was halved in s's. Both were a little'" strong at the iron-shot twelfth, but both approached well, halving in 3's. The thirteenth saw a good half in 4's. Grant was in the rough to the right, and Lusk in thp bunker from the tee at the next. Grant played a fine niblick shot out of the long grass. Lusk missed a putt of eight feet, and gave Grant a half stymie, but the latter secured a half in 4. Both drives kicked off the fairway to the right at the fifteenth. Lusk put a fine iron shot into the middle of the green, six yards from the pin. Grant just missed the bunker, but put' his third three yards from the pin and hpled the putt for a half in 4's. Grant just missed a 3 at the sixteenth, and won in 4. (Grant 1 up and 2 to go). Grant sank a four-yard putt at the seventeenth for a half in 4. The fifteenth was halved in s's, Grant winning 1 up. SECOND ROUND. S. Morpeth beat A. D. S. Duncan, 4 and 3. K. Ross beat W. R. Smith, 5 and 4. D. Grant beat H. B. Lusk, 1 up. A. G. Sime beat H. P. Dale, 1 up.
