BUTTER IN PAT AND TIN.

A noteworthy feature of the retail trade in butter iv Victoria during ChristmasNew Year period has been the demand of retailers for lib pats. Although print butter costs %d a lb more than butter in bulk, 'shopkeepers are finding that at exceptionally busy periods the saving of time in serving customers with lib pats instead of patting their own butter is well worth the additional cost. Throughout the week wholesale merchants have been supplying large quantities' of print butter. Another interesting feature of the butter marekt at present is the keen demand from traders who export butter in tins. Since the announcement that the bounty under the Paterson plan had been increased to 4d a lb, tinners have been buying freely so as to take advantage of the increase. The position in regard to the bounty since New Zealand's refusal to permit the operation of tlie Australian tariff of 6d a lb until June, 1028, has been somewhat obscure, and there is a doubt in the minds of some tinners regarding length of time for which the increased bounty will operate. This doubt is leading them to enlarce their turnover as much as possible while favourable conditions continue.
