FLAX POSITION.

Trade in New Zealand hemp has been dull since mid-December, which is only to be expected during the holiday season. The outlook is for low prices and irregular market as values for Manila continue to slip down, and although New Zealand fibre is not entirely dependent on the Manila market there is a certain degree of affinity between them. There has been very little news of the Sisal market coming through for some days. The quality of hemp coming in for grading shows a distinct improvement. Production is well sustained. If the present spell of good weather continues there ought to be a very satisfactory output from the Manawatu district of "good fair" and "high fair" grades for the remainder of the season. Nominal values for export are as follow:—Good fair, £29 10s; high fair, £28; low fair, £26; tow, No. 1, £15; No. 2, £14. Hemp-grading returns for the month ended 31st December are aB follow: — 1926. 1027. Bales. Bales. Hemp 9254 0403 Tow 2747 2903 Stripper tow ]1& 126 Stripper slips 20t 372 Of the total gradings of hemp for December last (9403 bales) 725 were good fair, 3523 high fair, 3892 low fair. Of the grand total graded 407 bales good fair, 1501 high fair, and 759 low fair were graded in 'Wellington.
