FINANCIAL BAROMETER

HOLIDAY TOTALISATOR TURNOVER A GENERAL INCREASE Whether the improved weaj-her throughout the holidays this year is the reason, or whether the economic position is more favourable, the totalisator returns for the holiday racing showed an increase in most places. The aggregate was £1,313,242, compared with £1,261,594 during the corresponding period last year, or an increase of £51,648. Of this sum the increase at the race meetings was £46,903 10b, and at the trotting meetings £4744 10s. Two years ago the grand total was £1,414,117 10s, bo that the figures are still something in arrears. The Auckland, Manawatu, Waipukurau, Stratford, and Auckland Trotting Meetings appear to have been the most successful judgpd on the totalisator - basis. Both Auckland fixtures were eminently satisfactory from this point of view. The one-day Waipukurau Meeting was easily best, for it almost doubled its turnover. The most pronounced decline was at the Marton Meeting, while the Wairarapa Meeting also showed a decided falling off, due possibly to racing on the Saturday and Monday instead of the two holidays, Monday and Tuesday. Following are the figures of the investments1 at the various racing and trotting meetings from 26th December to 4th January.
