CRICKET
SPECIAL MATCH WELLINGTON V. OTAGO MASSEY BOAVLS WELL For the continuation of tho special three-day fixture, the Otago touring eleven against Wellington at the Basin Reserve to-day, the weather was again fine, and the prospects for further cricket of a bright order were excellent. Faced with the task of overhauling Wellington's big jjirst innings total of 363 runs, Otago, with 157 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets, resumed their innings, Alloo, the Otago captain, and Cherry, who saved their side yesterday afternoon when things looked very bad for tho Southerners, carrying on. They were only able to add another ten, however, Cherry being clean-bowled when his tally had reached 65. He and Alloo put on 107 for the fifth wicket. Alloo (50) and Cherry (59) resumed Otago's innings at 11.32 o'clock, the former facing M'Girr, who bowled from the northern end. One run, a nice shot to leg, was the only product of the over. Massey bowled from the southern end, each batsman taking a single. Facing M'Girr, Cherry drove the leather nicely to the sight-screen. He did not last very much longer, however, Massey clean-bowling him with a ball that kept very low. 107—5—G5. Cherry had played an invaluable innings, hitting nine fours during his stay at the crease. Galland followed, and he opened his account with a drive to the sightscreen off M'Girr. Alloo continued to bat attractively. With the total at 182 Lambert replaced M'Girr (none for 31 off nine overs), but the change did not trouble tho batsmen, each of rivhom scored a couple of singles from the over. In Massey 'a next over Tattersall failed to hold a catch behind the wickets from Galland, who failed to connect properly in going for a big hit. A couple of balls later, however, Massey was successful in an appeal for lbw against Alloo. 188—6—58. Alloo had hit five fours and had played good cricket when it was needed most. Elmes was next, and he saw Galland hit Massey high to the ropes at square leg. Soon afterwards 200 appeared on the board, after 165 minutes at the crease, but only one more run had been scored when another wicket fell, Elmes going lbw to Lambert. 201—7—1. Douglas filled the vacancy, and he appeared to be caught by Dustin off the first ball he received, but Umpire Bock declined to allow the appeal. Douglas was uncomfortable to Lambert, but eventually he dispatched a fulltoss to the boundary. Galland was putting a lot behind his shots, and he twice drove Massey to the fence. With the total at 219, Badcock came on in place of Massey (five, for 5G off twenty overs). Galland hit his fourth ball high to the fence. Beard replaced Lambert, who had taken one wicket for 38 off twelve overs. Galland sent Beard's first ball to the pickets at square leg, and then changed ends with a single. GALLAND HITS OUT. Facing Badcock, Galland again opened his shoulders, reaching 50 with a couple of boundary shots. Douglas was still uncomfortable, but he managed to hold his end up. His partner monopolised the bowling, and he made excellent use of it, hitting Beard over the fence at square leg for 6. He reached his half-century in 45 minutes. At 248 Brice relieved Badcock (one for 40, off ten overs), and he bowled a maiden to Douglas. M'Girr replaced Beard, who had proved expensive. Douglas was still playing with great care, but he managed to glance M' Girr for a single, this being his second scoring stroke in just under half an hour. Eventually he went for a hit off Brice, but ho paid the penalty, skying the ball into Reaney's hands. 262 —B—G.8 —G. Torrance was next, and he opened by driving M'Girr to the fence, but he soon lost Galland, who was caught behind tho wickets by Tattersall off Brice. 269 —9 —70. With a lead of*94 runs,_ Wellington commenced their second innings at 12.10, Tattersall and Airey taking strike. Torranco was entrusted with the attack from the northern end, bowling a maiden to Tattersall. Alloo bowled from the south, and hia first was also a maiden. Tattersall opened the account with a single off Torrance, but he was far from comfortable to succeeding balls. At luncheon there were throe runs on the board, scored in nineteen minutes. Tattersall was three, and Airey had not opened his account. SLOW CRICKET Airey broko his duck after lunch, placing Torrance past slips for a single. Tattersall followed up with a nice carpet drive for four. Scoring, however, was slow, the bowlers keeping tho batsmen very quiet. Torrance was bowling an excellent length. Airey was applauded for scoring a single—his second scoring shot—off Alloo. He responded to the barrack by square-cutting Torrance for four, ten appearing on the board after thirty-one minutes. TWO WICKETS FALL. Alleo and Torrance each bowled a maiden, the latter almost bowling Airey with one ball. Torrance's next over saw Tattersall dismissed, Galland accepting a catch behind the sticks. 14 — I—B. Lamason was next, and opened with a single off Torrance. Airoy cheered the hearts of the spectators by driving Alloo for two. A little later, however, ho was caught behind the sticks off Torrance. WELLINGTON. First innings -563 Second Innings. H. J.
