PRIZE-GIVING AND BREAK-UP
SOCIAL
The annual prize-giving and end of the season social was , attended by a large number of members and friends. The president of tho association, Mr. VV. J. Mason, occupied the chair. In addressing "the members the president referred to the good I work of the classes during the year. • He congratulated the members on their wisdom in following out health training, and congratulated them on their large membership of 618 members. Mr. Len J. Greenberg, the general secretary; in endorsing Mr. Mason's remarks, made special reference to the work of the physical diri ector, Mr. J. A. Duffy, and his leaders. As a recent arrival from Western Australia, he assured the members that Wellington V.M.C.A. gymnasium was favourably known throughout Australia. He also congratulated Messrs. Steptoe and Hurley, also Miss Ayling, for their leadership in connection with the suburban gymnasiums.,. Special reference was made to the past' carnival which was held at the Opera House, and though the attendance' at this function was below previous years,
tho entertainment provided by the gymnasium was considered to be equal, if not superior, to any of the past carnivals. The gymnasium members had by their efforts brought before the public one of the finest physical displays he had been privileged to fitness. He also announced that in the near future the association premises aud its appointments would be, altered, being brought up to date, where members would be in a much better position to carry on their health training.
Mr. J. A. Duffy, replying on behalf of the members, thanked the president and the general secretary for their eulogistic remarks. He pointed out that the 1927 season had been an excellent one as far as the co-operation of the pupils in the work of the gymnasium waa concerned. He asked members not to forget the many lessons they had learned during the year.
Special reference was made to Mr. A. C. Kitto, who has for the past six years acted as judge in the gymnastic competitions, and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Occasion was taken by the senior men's class to present to Mr. and Mrs. Duffy an inscribed barometer as a mark of their appreciation of the good work they had done during the year. Musical items were rendered by Misses Norma and Kathleen Walker, and musical monologues by Miss Zelma Carroll. The following were the winners of the various competitions:— Central V.M.C.A.
