REDDING SHIELD

PETONE CLUB WINS

The Petone rowing season was opened in fine weather on Saturday afternoon. The opening ceremony was performed by the Mayor of Petone (Mr. D. M'Kenzie), who spoke of the benefit to be derived from all outdoor sports, and from rowing m particular. Mr. M'Kenzie wished the Petone Rowing Glub a successful season, and said he Hoped championships would come to Petone in rowing as they had in other sports.

After the opening ceremony six short races were rowed for the Redding Shield. The Petone, Star, and Wellington Clubs participated. Five points were awarded for first'place, and two points for second place. The shield was won by Petone with 22 points, Star scoring 14 points and Wellington 6 points. The results of \the races were :— Open Fours.—Petone No. 1 crew: A. Jones (str;), f, Rodger (3), T. Slinn (2), R. Duncan (bow), 1; Star: G. Cooke XBtr.), G. Williams (3),, K. Crease (2), F. Mullins (bow), 2. Also started: Wellington, and Petone No.''2 crew. Star led for most of the way, and a hundred yards from the finish' were half a length ahead. Petone came up quickly, and with a fine burst of speed beat Star by a canvas. There was a length between Star and Wellington. Youths' Fours.—Star: D. Gray (str.), H. M'Lean (3), R. Comerford (2), S. Rees (bow), 1;- Petone: S. Burns (str.), G. Davis (3), L. Horn (2), I. Duncan (bow), 2. Also started: Wellington. Won by a length and a quarter, a similar distance between second and third.

Senior Double Sculls—Pe.tone: W. Burk (str.), F. Commetti (bow), 1; Wellington: Bright (str.), Sutherland (bow), 2. Also started: Star. The three boats were bunched over the last hundred yards, Petone winning by half a length. Star were half a length behind Wellington. Welter-weight Open Fpiirs.—Petone: G. Gardiner (str.), K. Rodgers (3), J. Kenward (2), F. Cropp (bow), 1; Wellington: T. Carter (str.), Herd (3), Carter (2), Holland (bow), 2. ' Also started: Star. Peton won easily, by a'length. ■
