ATHLETIC SEASON
FIRST SPORTS MEETING
C. H. JENKINS RUNS WELL
Good performances were registered, at the sports meeting—the first of the season—held at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. While there were some of last season's champions who showed that they have a good deal of work to do yet before they are in form, there were several others who went remarkably well. The entries for all events were good, and first-class entertainment was provided those to see the finish of the cycle road race. There was. an attendance of about 3000. -
A northerly wind was in evidence; otherwise conditions were ideal, the custodian (Mr. Brewer) having the tracks in fine order. The wind did not bother C. U. Jenkins to any extent in the 100 Yards' Handicap. Jenkins, although he has not done much training yet, was in quite good torm. Starting from the scratch, mark, he won his heat easing up in 10 3-ssec, and t°ok the final by a good yard in 10 2-ssec. -Ine 880 Yards Handicap provided a good race. The back-markers, C. Campbell and A. D. Priestley, were at the head of affairs going into the last lap, but about half way round T. Cole (30 yards) moved "P- took the lead, and eventually beat Campbell by three yards. Cole ran with good judgment. G. Bayne, who ran -weU against R A. Rose last season, won the One Mile Handicap from the 40 yards mark. . ' ■ ■ ■
