Many centuries ago an army of Danes lauded unobserved on tho shores of Scotland and determined to attack tho Scottish army by night. Approaching tho sleeping camp with great, caution, success seemed certain, when suddenly ono of tho Danes gave an awful scream which aroused tho men they wcro about to attack. The screaming inymlor, barcfootod, had stopped on a thistle. Alarmed, tho sturdy Scotsmen soon armed thomselvcs, fought well, and vanquished their cuomies. In gratitude for the plant that had been their salvation, they adopted tho thistlo as tho omblom of Scotland. Tho motto, "Nemo mo impune laccssit" (No.man provokes mo with immunity), is most applicable.
