MAORI FOOTBALL

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

GISBORNE, This Day. Xhe Poverty Bay Rugby Union has adopted a scheme for a competition among the Maori football clubs throughout the Dominion for a handsome trophy presented by the Prince of Wales. The trophy was presented by the Prince at the suggestion of the late Sir James Carroll, and it was the wish of the latter that the first match for the cup should be played at his birthday celebrations at Whakaki. The Maoris desire that this should be carried out, and that the competition should start at Whafcaki on 20th August. The Rugby Union, believing that the competition would foster Rugby amongst the Natives, has decided to approach the Maori Advisory Board and the New Zealand Union on the matter.
