TRENTHAM NOTES

(By "Vedette.")

After a frost it was beautifully fine at Trentham this morning. The course proper and trial grass tracks were available for horses with Eicearton engagements, and these were practically the only ones to go fast. The rest of the Trentham contingent go by to-morro-.v night's ferry steamer.

Quantum was allowed to stride out, but as he was worked before the early fog lifted no attempt was made to gallop him against time. He has done well since his race at Trentham, and he may show up in either of the races in which he is engaged next week. Carrigallon on the course proper was under a strong pujl to run half a mile in 59sec.

Tresham and Passionate on the trial grass jumped away at the six furlong post and keeping together all the way covered the distance in lmin 24Jsec. the last half-mile taking 55sec. Treshani has done plenty of racing and may earn something towards his winter oats bill in the South.

S. Eeid's pair, Indian Sage and Nadarino, separately, were sprinted down the straight six-furlong course for about three furlongs. They both have a well-trained appearance, and if they fail to win a race at Bieearton it will not be because of lack of condition. Eeid is not going South himself with his horses, for he has a big team at home.-

Cerf and Prince Paladin broke away at the half-mile post and both pleased by getting-to the end of the journey in 53see. Cerf appeared to have all the worst of the weights. Black Mint just trotted and cantered about the middle. This gelding has done little fast work sin&e the Trentham Meeting, but one or two fast gallops at Eicearton should see him at his best.

Vexatious strode out over a round. She has built up since racing at Trentham arid should pay to follow in the hurdle races in the South. An effort is being made to eecure the services of H. M'Sweeney for her in the Trial Hurdles and Grand National Hurdle Race, but nothing definite has been arranged yet.

Hokioi (P. M'Brearty) gave a good clean display of jumping over the five fences up the back and round to the turn on the course proper. His jumping ability should stand to him well at Ricearton.

J. Ayres was back on the track this morning, and although his arm is not right he is able to superintend the training of his team again. S. Reid sent Merit, Glimpse, and Anthem, all three English mares, away to-day on a visit to Leighton. Grand Knight after long strong work ■with the sweaters on was given two solid rounds on the course proper. J. Gage Williams's team for the Marton Meeting- will be Grand Knight, Mount Marta, Zarisee, Wild Pigeon, and the two-year-olds Shot Silk (Leighton— Blended) and Wet Paint (Leighton— Mascot).
