NELSON, 23rd July. A very large and excited ' attendance greeted the contenders for the Rugby Seddon Shield, and the play on both sides was very willing. The game ended with Nelson winning by, 23 points to West Coast's 15. The curtain-raiser junior match ended: College 6, Wakatu 3. At 'Soccer," Thistle beat Athletic 1-nil, thus winning the shield. The Ladies' Golf Club held the first of. two medal rounds for Mesdames A. and E. Allen's trophy. The best cards were: Miss M. Hayes, 106-31—75; Mrs. Fell, 96----20—76; Mrs. Waters, 99-19—SO. The second round' will be played next Friady. Mr. P. W. Greenwood, Agricultural Instructor, is in Nelson 1 arranging for the Farmers' Winter School.
Mr. E. <G. Kemnitz, a member of the Nelson Referees' Association, has been chosen by the New Zealand Rugby Union as referee in the match Maori team v. Buller, at Westport on 3rd August. The .Hon. : A. D. MXeod has notified the Mayor that he will visit Nelson on Monday. ■ His visit ia mainly- for the purpose of inquiring into the position ; of Crown tenants at Tapawera. It is announced that Mr. H. Robison, manager of the N-jlson branch of the Bank of New South Wales, will retire at the end of September. .He will be succeeded by ,Mr. E. H. Mabin, who for 15 years has occupied the position of manager at Greymouth.
Mr. E. B. Martin, of Nelson, has attended the Nelson Poultry Association's shows for the past 40 years without a break, and has been an exhibitor, for most of that time. Mr. W. A. Sowman, of Blenheim, has been both attending and exhibiting for about 30 years./- Further awards at the Show are:—Best young O.E. game, E. B. Martin (Nelson): best O.E. spangled game, E. D. Barry (Nelson); best fancy American Barred Rock (young), W. A. Sowman (Blenheim); best young bird in fancy classes. Hockey Bros. (Nelson); best Minorca, G. Miller; best American White Leghorn, Hockey Bros.; O.E. Game Club Cup, E. B. Martin; most points in Barred Rocks, W. A. Sowman; cup for exhibitor securing most points at Show, Hockey Bros.
The Girl Guides and Brownies of Motueka entertained at tea on Wednesday last Mrs. Wickens, late lieutenant of tho local guides. Many presents were handed to the guest. The results of the basket ball matches were: Rewa 25, v. Kotiri 2; Old Girls 46, v. Kowhai 8; Wesley A 26, v. V.M.C.A. thirds 0; V.M.C.A. (B) 30, v. Ngaio 3.
