AT KAWARAU
HARD FROSTS CONTINUE
'By Telegraph.)
(Special to "The Evening Post.")
DUNEDIN, This Day. Under the influence of very hard frosts, the Kawarau continues "to fail steadily. There was a very hard frost on Saturday night, and the most severe of the season last night. Where reliable levels havo been taken the drop is pronounced. In a wide stretch of the river the water is seven inches lower than on Friday. The frosts show distinct signs of continuing, and will tighten many of the mountain streams, while both the Nevis and the Shotover will show the effects also.
Though no great work is being undertaken- yet, the majority are awaiting a further drop. Several companies have won a few pennyweights, mostly heavy gold. The Natural Bridge claim on Friday secured an additional seven dwts., and yesterday several directors secured just on two ounces, making approximately six ounces to date since Thursday, The natural obstructions in the river are now receiving consideration, and the blasting of Uieso will cause a'substantial drop in many places. More work is likely as tho river falls. There should bo developments this week.
