LOST OVERBOARD
INQUEST ON SEAMAN

AUCKLAND, This Day. Although it is customary to havo the body when holding an inquest, provision is made under the Shipping and Seamen Act, 1908, whereby an inquiry into tho death of a seaman may be directed by tho Minister of Marino after a certain period has lapsed. Such an inquiry was held this morning by Mr. M'Kean, S.M., regarding the death of Sidney "Veale, a fireman, who was lost overboard from the trawler Countess on 29th April, near Tiri Tlri Island.
The master said that Venlc was emptying the ashes and over-balanced, Tho man must have been struck by the propeller as ho swept past, for ho disappeared two minutes after ho fell. Tho crew was immediately called, but a little time was lost in launching the lifeboat, as the cover, which was nailed to the top of the boat, was stuck owing to the wood being swollen by the water. Nevertheless, the boat was got over the side in six minutes, but there was no trace of tho lost man.
.' verdict was returned that the deceased fell overboard accidentally while emptying an ash can. The deceased left a widow and three children.
