ARAPUNI STRIKE

A DEFINITE SETTLEMENT

Actually the employers conceded the overtime claim, involving 4s 9d but they had not refused to do so before the strike was set 'in motion. The employers took the stand they did becanso the calling of the strike was unconstitutional- and. contrary to the workers' agreement of 1925.
.Mr. P. Hally, Conciliation Cominissionor, and Mr. T. O. Bishop (representative of the Employers' tfederationA waited at Arapuni and assisted to brine the parties together. It .may be said that the men's representatives .admit, ted that the interpretation-of. the over-' time clause by the company had fJcen right. It had nbtbeeri properly acfin--ed, however, and after discussion the company's representatives agreed to accept the definition and terms'of the clause in the builders arid contractors' labourers ; award (north industrial district), winch allows double time for work done between midnight and 6 a.m., it the workman has already worked dnriag the day, and time and a half for work done between 6 a.m. and the ordinary time for starting work It is officially stated for the union wWH, "exfc'nCCti"g I 1 wiu consider whether it will secede from the parental^ executive and join the Auckland .Labourers' Union.
