SYDNEY WIN RUBBER CLOSE FIJS TAL TEST NEW ZEALAND JUST BEATEN (United Press Association.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, Ist June. Ideal conditions ruled for the final Test match between the New Zealand and Sydney University Eugby teams. The following were the teams:— New Zealand.—Butler, Loveridge, Eoss, Lindsay, Pacey, Brandanovitch, Holden, Childs, Hindenach, Linton, Alley, Dunne, O'Regan, Fookes, Morete. Sydney.—Ross, Foote, Burge, Gibson, Johnson, Sheehau, Lamport, ODea, Waddington, Windeyer, Finlay, Flynn, Hingest, Doyle, Rosenblum. Dunne won the toss, and Sydney kicked off, and immediately attacked. Four minutes atfer the start New Zealand was penalised in a good position, and Ross kicked an easy goal; Sydney came again, and Johnson made much ground with the ball at toe. The ball went out in the New Zealand twentyfive. Then from the ruck Lamport secured and passed to Burge, who transferred to Johnson, who scored. Ross converted. Lindsay then made a great attempt to kick a goal from just inside half-way, but the. ball hit the post. The New Zealanders kept up the attack, but tHeir passing was ragged. A penalty against Sydney gave Lindsay his opportunity, and he kicked a nice goal, opening New Zealand's score. After a spell of even play Sheehan made a great run down the field, and his movement was finished by Gibson scoring well out. Ross failed to convert. LINDSAY PROMINENT. Lindsay, on the wing, was doing great work for New Zealand. He ran powerfully and kicked well. With a quarter of an hour to go, Hindenaeh had to leave the field and was replaced by Keegan. Sydney twice started dangerous rushes, but each, time mulled the chance. A penalty against Sydney saw the ball out on the Sydney line. From the ruck the ball went to Lindsay, who by means of a powerful run crossed near the line. His kick was unsuccessful. The New Zealand forwards were working like Trojans. Holden picked up smartly, and transferred to Brandanoviteh, who transferred to Pacey, who after a great run scored. O 'Regan's kick was unsuccessful, as the ball rolled over. A dashing rush between Gibson and Burge took the ball to New Zealand, territory,, and after some hard work. Foote scored at the corner. Ross failed to convert. The spell ended' Sydney 14 points, New Zealand 9. EXCITING FINISH. Edwards replaced Foot at half-time The spell opened with a desperate assault on the Sydney line, which was relieved by a free-kick owing to Holden hanging on when trying tn push his way over. Lindsay had a good but unsuccessful attempt at a field goal. From the ruck near the Sydney line, Holden obtained the ball, ran round the serum and passed to Linton, who transferred to Loveridge, the latter scoring at the corner. Lindsay's kick was wide. New Zealand maintained the pressure, Lindsay slipping on a soft patch, let Sydney away, but the Black defence and then a line kick by Butler saved the situation. A spell of hard forward play followed, Morete showing up prominently. The New Zealand backs wero combining well, and a certain try was spoiled by a pass forward from Paecy to Loveridge. Butler, who was too far up field, let the Sydney forwards away, but tho ball was knocked forward close to the Now Zealand lino. Play hung on tho Now Zealand line. Butler and then Holden shifted tho scene of action to half-way. Tho New Zealanders wero choosing the scrums for line-outs and working hardest to get ahead. Ten minutes before time this was achieved by excellent passing thorugh the New Zealand backs, Loveridge scoring O'Regan failed to add the major points. Sydney returned to the attack; New Zealand forwards off-side gave Ross a chance to kick a goal, which ho accepted, putting Sydney again in the lead. Tho game was fast and exciting, both teams going hard at it till the finish, but tho play ended without further score. Sydney 17 New Zealand 15
