THE DERBY

CALL BOY THE WINNER (United Press Association. —Copyright.) LONDON, Ist June. Following is the result of the DERBY STAKES, a sweepstakes of 50 soys, with 3000 soys added; for three-year-old colts and fillies. One mile and a half. Frank Curzon's eh c Call Boy, by Hurry On—Comedienne, 9.0 1 Sir Victor Sassoon's b c Hot Night, by Gay Crusader—Tubbercurry, 9.0 2 J. Courtauld's b c Shian Mor, by Buchan —Orlass, 9.0 3 There were twenty-three runners. Won by two lengths, with eight lengths between second and third. The Derby result lias borne out the contention of many good judges, that Adam's Apple was a lucky winner of the Two Thousand Guitieas. Call Boy finished second iv that race, but lie was evidently a much fitter colt at Epsom yesterday. The Derby this year has not been without its sensation, for Mr. Frank Curzon, the owner of Call Boy, has been very ill lately and evidently in Home quarters it was not expected that ho would live for the layers showed a decided inclination to go on with Call Boy. Had Mr. Curzon died Call Boy, under the English ltules of Racing, would not have been permitted to run in the Derby or in any other race in Mr. Curzon's nomination. Mr. Curzon wrote to the "Daily Mail" a week ago, however, and said: "If the colt is as fit as myself on, Ist June he will take a. lot of beating." Last season Call Boy was a big colt, and one for whom time would do a lot, as he had plenty of frame to grow to. His pictures show that he is very much of the same type as his sire, as like Hurry On he is a big raking chestnut, with a good deal more white about him, his near hind leg being.white almost to the hock, and the off-foreleg nearly to the knee. He also has a pronounced streak leaching from between the eyes to the end of the nose.' Call Boy's credentials were excellent, and he is bred the right way for a Derby winner. By Hurry On from Comedienne, by Bachelor's Double from Altoviscar, he was bred by his owner' His final run last season was in the Middle Park Plate, in which, after commencing slowly, lie won by the narrowest margin from Sickle and Birthright, each of whom was conceding him 31b. He was to have been ridden yesterday by E. C. Elliott, and lie is trained by J. E. Watts. Hot Night, the runner-up to Call Boy, I had come decidedly into the Derby betting after carrying 9.2 and winning the bledmere Plate at York in record time about ten days ago. He finished very well in that race, which was run over a mile and a quarter. The Australian jockey, P. Brown, was to have ridden him if he had stayed in England, but he came home, and H. Wragg was to have had the mount. Hot Night, who cost Sir Victor Sassoon 3800 guineas as a yearling, is by Gay Crusader from Tubercurry, by Captivation (son of Cyllene) from Glaze Wheel, by Orby, a Derby winner. The "Bloodstock Breeders' Review" said he did not compare favourably with some of His rivals in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster last year. He was tall and light-fleshed, and in the race mentioned finished badly after showing pace. The journal from which this is quoted states that the trip to Doncaster, the strange surroundings, and the crowd in the paddock played havoc with Hot Night's nervous system. It concluded as follows: "That Hot Night has great racing abilities there is no doubt, and these will again be revealed if his nervousness is cured." The colt's win at York points to J. Crawford having accomplished that. Shian Mor's third place is interesting, because of his sire Buchan, that extra ■good but unlucky horse of a few seasons ago. Shian Mor won at his last two starts as a two-year-old, and as with 9.7 he made a live furlongs record of S7 4-ssec for the Rous course at Newmarket, his pace is undeniable. | In the Free Handicap last year Mr 1 Dawkms allotted Sickle and Adam's Apple 8.10, Call Boy 8.9, Shian Mor 8.9, and Hot Night 8.7.
