VALUELESS CHEQUES
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, 30th May. Norman Raymond, aged 33 years, who committed an offence at Wellington by obtaining- £5 form Joseph Dwyer by means of a valueless cheque, was not arrested until he came to Auckland, where in the meantime he foisted cheques for a similar amount on the proprietors of the Grand and Star Hotels. Raymond pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. He was remanded to Wellington in connection with the offence committed there, which he also admitted. The police stated that the accused was living apart from his wife and had several previous convictions for theft and false pretences. He had posed here as Captain Coulson, of the Royal Navy.
