WALKING THE STREETS

BOYS FROM SCHOOL

SUPPLY IN EXCESS OF DEIVIAND

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

DUNEDIN, This Day. Many boys fresh from the primary schools arc walking the s t ree t s o f Dunedin in a vain effort.to obtain positions in the various trades, and some of them are being compelled by necessity to accept dead-end jobs in the country. This is the position as stated by a leading local labour agent to-day in the course of a chat on the present state of the labour market. He added that numerous youths with High School education were in an identical position in that they were unable to obtain positions in offices) due to the excessive supply of boys with secondary school education. "Very little country work is ottering just now, and the agent said that he was not placing nearly as many men. as he did at a similar period last year. "Harvesting has been very,: quiet>" he said, "and for every job offering at least twelve men are available. Shearing operations finished suddenly, and far earlier than was the case last year; more shearers were on hand; than last year, and all seemed surprised that the season finished so soon. Not many skilled tradesmen are seeking work. Domestics are offering in scores,' but positions are scarce. Sawmill hands and freezing workers from West-' land arid the North Island as far as Auckland are among the unemployed here."
