SECRETS OF LIFE
BISHOP OP LONDON'S ADDRESS
Five secrets of influence in life were disclosed by the Bishop of London at a reception to him on Monday in Canterbury College Hall, states the Chiistchurch "Press."
The Bishop said that \% was"there not only as Bishop of London, but as having been for nine years head of Oxford House in Bast London. At first he found opposition to the work, but it was grad"ally removed, and during the nine years young men in the movement did excellent work, gaining the complete confidence of the people. The Bishop continued that there were five secrets that influenced people in life. They were:-
(1) Be absolutely sincere. Mr. Baldwin, because he was sincere, had great influence over the Opposition benches. (2) Have some real object in life. The world to-day .had no use for slackers. His dear old father, land owner and clergyman, always urged on his children to have some purpose. It was that which influenced the thirty young men who worked with the speaker in East London.
(3) Avoid frills and "side." People would lose their influence if they put on frills, as they said in America, or put on side,' as they said in England. Personal vanity corroded character more than anything else except moral sin. Personal humility was one of the secrets of influence. Vanity sapped all good influences.
(4) Faith in God. Belief in God was essential to influence. Atheism destroyed confidence in me:, and women. Distrust immediately arose when people said that they, did not believe in God feome sort of oelief in a power above was absolutely essential. Most of the Labour men at Home were religious men, and the most religious were the most influential.
(5) A sense of humour. If the speaker had not a sense of humour he could not have held the vast London multitudes away from the Mormon leaders next door. A sense "of humour saved people from making a mountain out of a mole-hUI. A person with a sense of humour made light of little difficulties and of Jiardslnps. It was one of the important secrets of life. r-'I 1* I^°, not Bee y°n again," the Bishop addpd, "let me remind you of these secrets of influence. Take them into your lives.
