CROWDED PALMERSTON

PALMERSTON N., 3rd March. The Royal car arrived at Palnierston Station at 5.40 p.m. As the train pulled up, Their Excellencies descended to a prettily decorated platform and were met by the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Nathan). Little Miss Nathan then presented a bouquet to Her Excellency. Introductions then followed to the councillors and their wives. Amongst those present on the platform were: Messrs. W. H. Field, J. Nash, and J. Linklater, M.P.'s; Colonel Powles, O.C. Wellington Military District; Mr. J. M. Johnston, president of the Manawatu Club; and Mr. P. Small, chairman of the Kairanga County Council.

The Eoyal party then moved off the platform to waiting cars, and immediately they made their appearance the dense crowds that lined the streets gave them a spontaneous and sustained welcome. The party then proceeded through the streets past {he soldiers' memorial, and thence to the Grand Hotel. Einging cheers greeted Their Eoyal Highnesses all along the route. The dense crowds following the Eoyal cars, congregated round the hotel, and although the Duke and Duchess were not scheduled to appear again to-night the crowd kept cheering as it grew, and in response to the popular clamour Their Eoyal Highnesses appeared on tho balcony. Their appearance was greeted with intense cheering, flagwaving, and other indications of enthusiasm. Then the Duchess made her appearance, and waved her hand to the packed audienco below her. Great as had been tho welcome before, this graceful action was the sign for renewed applause, and- tho crowd lost all restraint, throwing hats, balloons, and flags high into tho air to the accompaniment of deafening cheering.
