BANKRUPTCIES OF 1926.

The number of persons adjudged bankrupt in 1926 was 752, as compared with 653 in 1025, G7O in 1924, 674 in 1923, and 095 in 1922. The Government Statistician's 'cutiimeut on these figures is that "they lire considerably below pre-war level and serve to illustrate the severity of the trade depression of 1921-22. The increase in the 1526 figures, which are the highest since ISSB, may be put down to the mild slump experienced during the year as a result of a drop in export jjrices." The districts in which the bankruptcies were dealt with are:—Auckland, 328; Wellington, 217; Marlboroitgh, 13; Nelson, IS; Canterbury and Westland, 92; South Canterbury, 23; Otago, 27; and Southland, 31.
