ADMITTED TO PROBATION

CHRISTCHURCH, ath Feb. William Berriugton Roberts (aged 32) pleaded guilty before Mr. H. P. . Lawry yesterday to a charge of obtaining an overcoat valued at £3 10s and £5 17s in money from Alexander M'Leod by means oE a valueless cheque. There was a further charge that on 27th September, 192G, and on other dates at Wanganui lie stole £1 17s Id from Tom Hodson. Roberts pleaded guilty to the first charge and not guilty to the second. Chief-Detective Lewis said, with reference to the first charge, that accused in Dunedin obtained two blank cheques. He filled one in and obtained the overcoat and change by it. He admitted filling in the other cheque, for which he obtained boots and change. Roberts Was convicted and admitted to probation for two years on the first charge,. and was ordered to repay the amount. On the second charge he was remanded to appear at Wanganui on 11th February.', ~
