ITALY SUPPORTS BRITAIN
DEFENCE OF SHANGHAI CONCESSION
WARLIKE ATTITUDE OF PRESS
(Received 7th February, noon.)
ROME, 6th February.
The Italian Note to Britain was drawn up after Signor Mussolini had freely consulted with Sir Andre Chamberlain. It only agrees to join Britain in the defence of the Concession at Shanghai, if necessary.
Although political circles are convinced that Anglo-Italian action will be limited to police measures, the newspapers assume a warlike attitude, the "Impero" declaring that Britain has chosen the right argument—with the cannon—which Italy must imitate to extinguish Chinese anarchy aud brigandage masked as Nationalism.
The most important news in regard to the situation in China to-day is the definite decision of Italy to stand by Britain in the defence of the Foreign Concession at Shanghai. The indications are that the other Powers are coming into line.
