MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Police cases in the Magistrate's Court yesterday were dealt with by Mr. E. Page, S.M.

"You seem to have haa dozens of chances, and you have a long list of convictions for various offences," said the Magistrate in sentencing Peter Butler, alias Clancy, a labourer, to one month's imprisonment for being an idle ana aisorderly person. Butler admitted that he had begged alms in Willis street yesterday.

"I thought I might better myself by coming here; things are 'a bit crook' at Home," said William James Dixon, a seaman, aged 37, who admitted deserting from the Botorua. When a shipping company official had explained that the accused had conducted himself well, and that his offence was not regarded aa a serious one, the Magistrate convicted Dixon and ordered him to forfeit the wages due to him. For being an idle and disorderly person, John Fry, alias Bole, a labourer, aged 58, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. On a charge of drunkenness Fry, who has twenty-seven previous convictions for varioua offences, was convicted and orderea to pay £2, motor-car hire.

Charged with the theft of a dress ana a quantity of serge of a total value of £2 17s 63, belonging to Theresa Morrissey, Arthur Thomson Hornell, a labourer, agea 18, was remanaed to appear at Christchurch to-morrow.

A fifth offender for arunkenness, Jack Williams, a labourer, aged 56, was fined £3, in default fourteen days' imprisonment.
