MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
PETONE AND LOWER HUTT
Mr. JWV. M'Ewan, who'has served the Petone Borough as Mayor for 'the past twenty years, has decided not to seek re-election. -Councillor G. Cook, at the request, of the Petone Civic Association, will be a candidate for the Mayoralty.
Councillors E. N. Campbell and "W. H. Edwards are the only councillors who, so far, have definitely announced their candidature,, and of the others Councillor H. Jay ■states definitely that he will not be standing. Mr. W. T. Strand, Mayor of Lower Hutt, states that if a desire is expressed by the electors for his candidature for a further term he~will be willing to accede to the request. Up to the beginning of this week he was not in a position to arrive at a decision, but since then events had taken place which will enable him again to offer his services. °
Councillors A. Grierson, A. M'Bain, and A. J. Hobbs will offer themselves for re-election; Councillor "W. Meldrum will be a candidate unless unforeseen circumstances prevent him; Sir A. F. Roberts, who served for a term before accepting the position of representative of the Dominion at "Wembley, states that he feels it his duty, in view of the short term previously served, to offer his' services to the borough again, and he will be a candidate. He was asked some months ago if, in the event of Mr. Strand not- being a candidate, he would contest the Mayoralty, but stated that he would be unable to accept nomination for that office.
Councillor L. T. Watkins contemplates a visit to England, and will not be a candidate.
Councillors Hobbs (Lower Hutt). and Jay* (Petone) will seek re-election to the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board.
