PROVINCIAL TOURNEY
FINAL STAGES REACHED
MISS A. HOWE CHAMPION
Play in the Wellington Provincial Tennis Championships was resumed this morning under good weather conditions, and as but fifteen matches remained to be played, the tournament will bo concluded in. all probabilit3r.
The final of the ladies' singles chanipionship between Miss A. Howe and Miss M. Traey was one of the first matches played to-day. Miss Howe lost the first two games, but then drew level. Three all was called and four all. Miss Howe was placing with great precision, but Miss Tracy, whose footwork and net play was very pretty to watch, took the next game. By keeping Miss Tracy away fr,oni the net Miss Howe equalised at five all. A ding-dong struggle then ensued, games being won by each player alternately, until Miss Tracy managed to forge ahead and take the first set at 9-7. In the second set Miss Howe
kept her opponent on the defensive, and took the first four games. Miss Tracy then rallied and took the next three games. Miss Howe won the next game
(5-3). . Miss Tracy, however, was: not done, with, and equalised at five all. A repetition of the first set followed, and, although Miss Howe time and again looked like winning, Miss Tracy always managed to come to. light, and finally led at 9-8. The next game she won, taking the set and match.at 10-8.
N. R. C. Wilson had. to fight hard to win from M. Lampe in the semi-final of
their match in the men's singles championship. Some exhilarating tennis was played by both of them, Lampe winning the first set 6-3. The next two sets Wilson won, 6-4, G-l. He had a lead of 4-lovo and 5-2 in the last set, but Lampe fought gamely to the end.
In the semi-final of the ladies' handicap singles Miss D. Howe (10) accounted for Miss E. Brady (scr), 50-39, qualifying to meet Miss S. Preedy (15) in the final.
A semi-final mixed doubles handicap match between T. Richardson and Mrs. Davidson (20) and W. T. Harbison and Miss E. Rogers (28) resulted in a win for the former, 50-46. In the semi-final of the men's handicap doubles A. S. Chandler and F. Cornet (26) beat W. T. Harbison and K. B. Longmore (30), 60-51, and M. O. Gardner and C. S. Plank (24) beat R. P. Andrews and W. V. Fisher (30), 60-57. Men's Doubles Handicap.—Final: M. O. Gardner and C. S. Plank (24) beat A. S. Chandler and F. Cornet (26), 60-53.
Ladies' Single' Handicap.—Final: Miss D. Howe (1*0) beat Miss S. Prcedy (15), 50-42. Mixed Doubles Handicap.—Final: T. Biehardson and Mrs. Davidson (20) beat C. S. Plank and Miss M. Bell (20), 51-49. ; •
Ladies' Doubles Handicap.—Semifinal: Miss E. M. Madeley ana Miss Goodwin (15) beat Misses A. and D. Howe (ser), 50-48. Final: Miss J. Bennett and Miss H. I. Dorman (24) beat Miss E. M. Madeley and Miss Goodwin (15), 50-26. .
