MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Police cases in the Magistrate's Court to-day were dealt with by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M.
Trouble outside an hotel on Saturday resulted in the appearance of an uncle and his nephew, Daniel Phelan, a labourer, aged 30, and John Joseph Dempsey, a millhand, aged 19. Both had been drinking, and Dempsey, after he had been asked to leave the hotel, went back and struck the porter, Stanley Herbert Neagle. He then resisted Constable Harris, who attempted to arrest him, and Phelan, who was also drunk, tried to pull the young fellow_ away. Both men were convicted and discharged for drunkenness. Phelan was fined £2, iv default fourteen days' imprisonment, for obstructing the constable, and a similar penalty was imposed on his nephew, both for resisting arrest, and assaulting the porter. Phelan was allowed two weeks in which to find the money. William Brownlee pleaded guilty to two charges of obscene exposure, and was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be concurrent.
A nineteen-yeaivold plasterer, who admitted stealing a soda-water syphon from an hotel, and who had no explanation to make, was fined £2, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. The Magistrate granted the accused's application for the suppression of his name and allowed- him one week in which to pay. For using indecent language, James Linley was fined £2, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. i 1 our first offenders for drunkenness were find 10s each, the amount of their bail, and three others, who spent,the week-end in the cells, were convicted and discharged.
