A DRAWN GAME

AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON \

SPECIAL MATCH CONCLUDES

CONCLUDING STAGES INTERESTING.

The special match between Auckland and Wellington had an interesting turn of events in its concluding stages at the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon. Auckland had lost six wickets before their first innings deficiency had been wiped off, and the chances were that they would be decisively beaten. Dacre, however, came -to light with a brief but smashing performance, and Matheson also supplied a valuable finishing touch to make the position practically secure for a drawn game. Wellington were left with 110 runs to make for V win, but with less than half an hour in which to do it. The local men went, for the runs, only to meet trouble, and four wickets fell very cheaply before stumps were drawn. .Nevertheless, Wellington had the better of the game. DACRE OPENS OUT. With six wickets down for 175 runs, Dacre joined Postles, who had made 16. The bowlers were Collins andyM'Girr, and the Auckland captain opened'out to the former. A big hit to leg saw the deficiency wiped off, and, following another four, Dacre lifted a ball from Collins clean out of the ground into Kent terrace. At 193 Mitchell was tried in place of M'Girr, only to be severely dealt with by Daere, who netted 13 runs from one over. Massey relieved Collins and kept the runs down, but both batsmen scored freely from Mitchell. In quicktime Dacre' ran up a total of 37.' The tea adjournment was then taken, Postles Being 24. Only twp runs had been added to the score after tea wEen Postles was unfortunate in losing his wicket. A ball from Massey hit the batsman's' pads, bounced upwards, and .went on to the wicket. 222—7—24. Player was next, only to see iJacre clean bowled by M'Girr without any further addition to the score. -The Auckland captain had been at the crease for 30 minutes, playing in his usual aggressive style for 37. He hit one six and five fours. 222—8-37. \ . ' A. BRIGHT FINISH. Matheson joined Player, and ran into double figures .before the latter scored a run.' Two successive balls from Massey were driven hard by Matheson to ,the At length Player made his first scoring shot off M'Crirr, pushing the ball far enough to score a single. With the total at 247 Hollings replaced Massey (one for 46 in 15 overs). Matheson, however,, was in scoring mood," and he scored well while Player held his end up. . The score reached 250, and with Matheson still going well it wag carried on to 269 when Player, who had scored only four runs, was brilliantly caught by Hollings off this bowler's own delivery. 269—9—4. Scott was last man, and he, too, held out while Matheson • continued to gather in runs in forcing style. Finally Kortlang brought off a splendid catch to dispose of Matheson, who had given a bright display in scoring 42. i Six'fours were' included in Matheson's score. Bowling honours for Wellington were shared by Collins.and M'Girr, who took four and three wickets respectively. Details:— AUCKLAND. . First Innings 307 ' Second Innings.
