MACHINE-GUNS FOR CADETS,

Cadet units attached to secondary schools are to have the privilege of using machine-; guns for training purposes. In Orders issued by Major-General R. Young,; Officer Commanding theNeW;Zealand Mill: tary Forces, there appears the following:— "Authority is hereby given: for-the issue to Cadet unite of secondary schools, on the recommendation of the. Colonel Commandant of the command concerned, of — One gun, machine, \Sckers, ; .303in., complete •. ith tripod and. spare-parts box, filled; or one gun, machine, Lewis, .303 in., complete with spare-parts bug, filled.. Colonel-Commandants will approve the issue of these weapons only to unite that are efficient and have the services of qualified instructor. Great care is to be exercised in the care and maintenancee of guns issued under this authority, and where any neglect in this connection is n»ticed by inspecting officers, gun* will be withdrawn, and . the ■ facj; notified to; command headquarters. Target or field, practices with these ; weapons must first be approved by the Staff Officer in Charge Regimental District, and will take place only on ranges or approved.localities under the strict supervision of an officer of the unit, ■ who has „ a practical knowledge of the weapon in use, or of an officer warrant officer, or noncommissioned officer of the N.Z. Permanent Forces. Ball firing with these -weapons mil be restricted to Part I. of the Vickers machinegun course, or Part I. of v the course for light automatics, and such elementary held practices as are approved .by the Stall Officer in Charge Regimental .District; Ammunition allotment will b« the same as for -the Territorial Forces.
