MONEY.

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day.

"People who handle other people's money should be very ' careful,'' said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in imposing a fine of £5 on John Woods (35), who was charged with stealing £2. 2s, the property of the Waimauku Athletic Club, and with failing to account for & 7 received from the Waimauku Football Club.

The Chief-Detective said that the accused was the secretary and, treasurer of both clubs. When interviewed about the £2 2a, he handed it to the police, but failed to appear in Court at Helensville. He subsequently stated that his mother was ill, and he had to leave the district to go to Masterton to see her. The accused, who was married, had not been in trouble before.

Counsel said that as treasurer of the Athletic Club the accused handled £84 and kept the accounts correctly. When he went to visit his mother he used £7 for expenses, and had no intention of stealing it. As for the £2 2s, he gave it up when asked. The Magistrate, in addition to the fine, ordered the accused to make restitution of. the £7.
