SANDERS CUP TRIAL
PEGGY'S SECOND WIN
Tlie light, fluky south-easterly which prevailed late yesterday afternoon for the third Sanders Cup trial race was very much to the liking of the 14-footer Peggy, and she ran away from her opponents, the Wellesley and the All Black, on the homeward beat, thus scoring her second
Spinnakers were out on the fall of the last flag for the dead run from the starting line, between the Clyde Quay Wharf and the end of the Boat Harbour wall, to the Rakanoa, moored off Kaiwarra. The Peggy was a little ahead of the All Black, with the Wellesley a close third. Passing Pipitea Wharf, the Wellesley had taken the lead from the All Black, but when the Thorndon breastwork was reached the positions were reversed, and the Peggy ws coming up fast. A few yards from tho Rakanoa the three boats were in line, aud in an exciting manoeuvre the Peggy just beat the Wellesley and the All Black round, in that order. The breeze dropped considerably at this stage, and the three skippers set out in search of a slant. The Wellesley caught a puff well out on the harbour, but soon lost it and fell behind. The others kept well into the wharves and did better, the Peggy gaining a little by picking up a slant which the All Black missed. By now there was hardly a ripple on the harbour and the yachts were scarcely moving, but the Peggy had the best of what wind there was, and finished at 7.19 p.m., well ahead of the All Black and the Wellesley, in that order.
The fourth trial will take place tomorrow afternoon.
