SHOW ASSOCIATION

THE JOHN STREET BUILDINGS.

A meeting of the General Committee of the Wellington Winter Show Association was held last evening, Mr. K. H. Nimmo presiding. In connection with the new Show buildings, the chairman stated that after many | interviews with the Mayor (Mr. Norwood) and Mr. W. H. Bennett, acting-chairman of the sub-committee, and the City Solicitor, an agreement was come to embodying the general terms upon which the association asked for the John street site. The council later adopted the report, giving the association the right to use the grounds, subject to a special condition that nothing should be done until the Act had been passed by Parliament. On receipt of this the manager had interviewed the Mayor, pointing out« the difficulties of the position. The executive committee met on the Monday to consider the matter, and adopted the manager's recommendation that the executive, with representatives of the ratepayers' associations and other bodies, should wait on the Finance Committee of the City Council at its next meeting. A letter had been received from the architects, the chairman said, pointing out that unless an agreement with the council could be completed at once it would be impossible to have the whole of the buildings erected in time for the next Show, and suggesting that part of the buildings could be gone on with. In view of tho general situation the executive was of opinion that there was no possibility of any building being ready for the next Winter Show, and wa3 taking steps to provide other accommodation. In the meantime steps were being taken to carry out the executive's recommendations in regard to the lease, and the whole question regarding tenure would be discussed by the executive^ as soon as the council's decision was known. It was • decided to procure a challenge cup of a value of abovt fifty guineas out of the association's funds for the fat stock shoiv. Mr. S. Wilson stated that the total membership of the association was now 1050.
