CYCLING ROAD RACE
PRIZE MONEY WITHELD.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, 18th November. The 100 miles cycling road race from Hamilton to Auckland, resulted:— & Hellier (New Plymouth), handicap 30min, actual time, shr 42min 30 4-ssec 1 C. H. Jennings (Palmerston North), 30miri, shr 48min 35 3-ssec ........ 2 A. C. Taylor (Auckland), 30min, shr 48min 52sec 3 There were twenty-six starters, the scratch men, S. M'Cann (New Plymouth) and R. Lasky (Christchurch) forfeiting the engagement. Other scratchings left Sutherland, on 12min, scratch man. The weather was fine, and the roads were in good order, with a few bad patches. Hellier, Jennings, and Taylor, all on the same mark, kept together practically throughout, overhauling the limit men in the last thirty miles. Hellier drew away to win by about six minutes from Jennings, with Taylor close behind third. There were several punctures. An official statement to-night gives Hellier the fastest time, shr 42min 30 2-ssec. J. Harcourt is placed fourth and Sutherland fifth, the last-named's time being given as 6hr 2min 35 l-ssec The starter, Mr. Q. Sutherland, said that the prize money would not be awarded until, the officials were satisfied that all riding conditions had been observed by the competitors. He said it had been alleged that some of the cyclists were towed by motor-cars at certain points, and that there were other incidents which needed investigation. He was passing Whangarata in an official car when a resident informed him that some riders had been towed past behind a motor-car. He himself had seen one rider step from a car and ride away when an official car approached.
