PASSENGER TRANSPORT
DOMINION AWARD SOUGHT.
A Dominion award is being sought by workers employed in the various methods of passenger transport service, including taxi-cabs and buses (city, suburban, and long distance). At a meeting of the Conciliation Council yesterday the portion of the question relating to long-distance service cars was considered. The other section dealing with taxis and suburban traffic omnibuses will be dealt with in Auckland.
The claims of the workers include wages, hours of employment, overtime, and preference. As this was the first occasion when the working conditions of this industry have been considered from a Dominion point of view, the work of the Council is of a most difficult nature.
The workers were represented by the following assessors: —Messrs. A. Kelly (Nelson), E. Gear (Wanganui), H. Hunter. .(Christchurch), L. Duncan (Napier), W,,,HuJ)ert (Dunedin), D. Mann (Dunedin), and A. Parlane, secretary of Wellington Drivers' Union (agent). The employers were presented by: Messrs. J. W. Sharpe (Petone), P. Free (Auckland), I. Kerr (Auckland), R. W. M.'Villy (Wellington), H. 1,. . Knight (Christchurch), R. Brown (Dunedin), and B. C. Hammond, New Zealand Employers' Association (agent). Considerable progress wns made during the day, and at 5.30 proceedings were adjourned.
