SPECIAL CONTROL BOARD
j: TO ORGANISE INITIAL WOBK. In a covoring letter to the ActingPrhne Minister, under the same date,
the Mayor says his committee's chief desires are that the Government will honour their commitments under the headings:-—(1) National War Memorial; (2) Art Gallery and Museum. Further, that it will allow tho incorporation with them of the Wellington War Memorial Carillon, and that the Mount Cook Barracks site be set aside for the purpose on terms and conditions to be mutually agreed upon. Mr. Norwood proceeds: "Providing you are prepared to agree to the past promises of the Government relative to the above matter to stand, then my committee seeks your agreement to incorporate the several votes as one, and, if you acquiesce, they ask for a special control board to be set up to organise the initial work, subject to your final approval. My committee believes that if the work is carried out in sections and spread over a number of years it will not bear unduly upon the finances of the country, and when completed will be a work of national importance."
