WORSE TO COME

BAD WEATHER PREDICTED.

Barometric pressure has decreased during the last twenty-four hours, and there is now over an inch difference between the readings in the Far North and the Far South. The barometer being lowest in the South (29.09 inches at Bluff) northerly winds, strong to a gale, have been experienced, the steep gradient accounting for boisterous weather all over the Dominion. Heavy rain has been general, Arthur's Pass recording nearly five inches, but Wellington has escaped so far with but one point during the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. The barometer is expected to fall still further, with wind backing from north to west. A heavy gale, especially in and about Cook Strait, is probable. Kain is likely to be widespread, with flooded rivers in the South, and the seas generally will be rough. On the east coast of both Islands it may be finer, but only for a ihort time.
