(By Telegraph.)
(Special to "The Evening Post.")
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day
The weather was mild for the training operations at Riccarton -this morning, though a strong breeze waa blowing. The outside of the course proper provided good going, and a large crowd watched the final fast gallops. Commendation provided the first interest. With Mime as a mate, he jumped off at the seven-furlong post, and halfway through was joined by Many Colours, while Mime dropped out. Commendation finished the task in lmin 29sec, a really good performance, as he was going on strongly at the end. Fool's Paradise and Buoyant were companions over half a mile, which they covered in 50 3-osec. Shirley occupied lmin 10 l-ssec for six furlongs. Rapine jumped off at the mile and a quarter post, and, after going two furlongs, was joined by Star Stranger. They kept together for the remainder of the journey, which Rapine covered in 2min 11 l-ssec, the last half-mile being done in 52 2-ssec. Rapine finished strongly. Precious sprinted half a mile in 49 3-5 sec, and was going well at the finish. Grand Knight covered six furlongs in lmin 16sec, finishing alongside Nadarino, who joined in for the last five furlongs. Cimabuc beat Royal Ceres over half a mile in 49sec. Clarinda was a little too good for Piuthair at the end of nine furlongs, which they ran in lmin 57-2-ssec. Licinius beat Mimetic over five furlongs in lmin Saee, Centrepiece ran six furlongs in lmin 16 2-ssoc, Serotina and Card Trick joining in for the last half-mile, which occupied 50 3-sseC. Moorland reeled off six furlongs very attractively in lmin 15 3-osec. Reremoana finished well clear of Lady Desmond at the end of five furlongs in lmin 4 l-ssec. Reremoana carried a good weight, but it was not a good performance. Tarleton, Goosestep, and Full Swing were companions over a mile and a quarter. Full Swing was slow to get going, and was several lengths behind the other pair' when they reached the mile post. Full Swing was still in the rear at the entrance to the straight, but wore her rivals down over the last furlong, winning by nearly a length, while Tarleton and GooseEtep were together. The time was 2min II 4-ssec, the last mile being run in lmin 44 4-ssec. Full Swing finished very strongly, but Goosestep's performance was highly satisfactory as he carried a big weight. Ravenna and Overdrawn 'occupied 2min 15 3-ssec for a mile and x. quarter without being unduly hurried at the finish. Count Cavour, Desert Glow, and Beacon Light broke away at the mile and a quarter post. It was not a good start, Beacon Light being three lengths in the rear, but he soon joined his mates. The three were together at the mile post, which they reached in 27sec. The next half-mile was run in 01 l-ssec. On reaching the straight. Beacon Light commenced to,drop1 back a little. Count Cavour was in front at the distance, but Desert Glow, finishing strongly, was on terms with Count Cavour at the winning post, with Beacon Light two lengths away. The full journey occupied 2min llsec, the last mile being run in lmin 44gec, and the last half-mile in 52 4-ssec. It was a (rood (jallop. Count Cavour and Desert Glow both pleased. Desert Glow finished particularly well, while Beacon Light's effort was satisfactory after his .'bad start. Set Sail beat Comic Song and Glentruin over six furlongs in lmin 14 3-ssec. They finished in that order, with two-lengths intervals. Set Sail gained many admirers, while Glentruin was disappointing. Kalakaua and Monoxide ran a mile in lmin 45 2-ssec.
