MANAWATU GORGE
RESULT OF THE SLIPS
TRAIN SERVICE SUSPENDED
FURTHER LANDSLIDES REPORTED

PALMERSTON N., This Day. The landslide in the Manawatu Gorge, which has blocked the railway line for eleven days, still presents difficulties to those engaged in the removal of the debris. It is understood that some further falls of earth occurred throughout yesterday. The sluicing operations were continued, but a large amount of earth must be washed down before the line is made safe. Mr. Bertinshaw, Wellington Inspecting Engineer, and Mr. E. Casey, of Auckland, the North Island Divisional Superintendent, arrived at Palmerston North this morning, and proceeded to the scene of the work with a view to expediting the operations. In this interim all the trains between Palmerston North and Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa have been cancelled indefinitely. No indication is given as to when the normal service will be resumed.
